From garden hoes to backhoes ... there's a fitting tool shed

1. Typically, your average tool shed is going to be a fair bit smaller than a garden shed or storage shed. Unless, of course, one of those tools is a backhoe, then it will be considerably larger than the other two.

2. Bear in mind, you are buying a tool shed. This means you have lots of tools with which to assemble a proper shed. Any of the more involved DIY projects such as the wooden sheds, metal sheds or vinyl sheds will serve your purposes nicely. By and large, these are more secure than out-of- the-box plastic sheds.

3. Don't dismiss the already assembled tool shed off hand, though. These products are quite secure, when used with a proper lock, and will save you a fair bit of time. After all, many people say they enjoy working with tools, but the construction of a shed probably isn't one of those things they are talking about.

4. Since your tool shed is likely a relatively small structure, you shouldn't have to worry about your neighborhood covenants or city zoning laws. However, if there is any doubt, you'll want to check into it before you buy or begin assembly.

5. The key responsibility of the tool shed is to protect your tools from the elements when they aren't in use. Test your prospective shed for resilience to weather before deciding, otherwise you'll have an unexpected project on your hands, namely, weatherproofing your new shed.

6. A tool shed need not be outside, though most prefer it there. Anyplace where it will fit is a good idea, as it keeps tools safe from kids and provides an available space to put things so you can avoid clutter.

7. Though many prefer a smaller tool shed, if you need to put some large equipment in there, make sure to measure things appropriately before you buy. Arrange things on the ground or outline walls with the appropriate measurements to make sure things will fit.

8.Nothing will go so far in tidying up the yard and garage than a dedicated tool shed. Hang some peg board, outline where you hang your tools and such, and you'll see. It's like a regular reminder to put your tools away.

9. Not enough can be said about keeping your tools away from thieves and young children. There is no easier method to safeguard your family and property than buying and using a simple tool shed.
